Etymology

From New Latin semilunaris, formed from Latin semi-, 'half,' + lunaris, 'lunar,' from luna, 'moon.' Anatomists applied the crescent-shape term to structures including the semilunar fold of the eye, valves, and the wrist bone now usually called the lunate.
