   philosophy, especially in Bertrand Russell: an object with the metaphysical and physical status of a sense-datum that can become one when perceived but need not actually be perceived

   In Russell's account, a sensibile can belong to the physical world even when it is not a datum to any observer.

From Late Latin sensibile, the neuter singular of sensibilis, 'perceptible by the senses,' from sentire, 'to feel or perceive.' Its plural is sensibilia. The broader learned noun denotes something capable of being sensed; Bertrand Russell gave the singular and plural a precise role in his theory of sense-data and the physical world.
