   The pond seemed to take a brief siesta during the stillest part of the afternoon.

Borrowed from Spanish siesta, 'afternoon rest,' from Latin sexta hora, 'the sixth hour' after dawn, approximately noon. The religious observance at that hour became associated in Spanish with the midday break and then with the customary afternoon nap.
