From Middle French spiritualite and Late Latin spiritualitas, from Latin spiritualis, 'of breathing or spirit,' ultimately from spiritus, 'breath, spirit.' The word first had ecclesiastical senses concerning church authority and property, then broadened to inward religious or nonmaterial experience.
