From Anglo-French tret or Middle French trait, 'a pull, draft, or turn of the scale,' from Old French traire and Latin trahere, 'to draw.' The commercial term named a customary allowance, commonly four pounds in every 104 pounds of suttle weight, for waste or deterioration in transit.
