   The aeronaut released ballast so that the balloon would climb above the clouds.

Borrowed from French aeronaute, formed from aero- ("air"), ultimately Ancient Greek aer, + -naut ("sailor, traveler"), from Greek nautes. Coined for balloon travelers, it was later extended to early aviators.
