Borrowed in the early nineteenth century from French aiguille, literally 'needle,' from Old French aguille and Late Latin acucula, a diminutive of Latin acus, 'needle.' Mountaineers applied the French word to the narrow, sharply pointed rock towers characteristic of the Alps.
