From Middle English solemnyzacioun, through Middle French solemnisation, from Medieval Latin solemnizatio, 'a solemn observance,' based on solemnizare, 'to celebrate solemnly.' The marriage sense became especially prominent in legal and ecclesiastical language. Solemnisation is the usual British variant.
