From Middle English appurtenaunce, through Anglo-Norman apurtenance, from apurtenir ('to belong to, appertain'), ultimately Latin ad- ('to') + pertinere ('to belong or extend to'). The legal sense preserves the core idea of something that belongs to a principal thing.
