The tree sense comes through Middle English from Old Norse bolr ('tree trunk, torso'). The clay sense is a separate word, from Middle French and Medieval Latin bolus, ultimately Greek bolos ('clod, lump of earth'). Their identical modern spelling and pronunciation are coincidental.
