Simplified etymology

Caddie is a Scottish form related to cadet, ultimately from Gascon French capdet, “little head” and hence “junior,” from Latin caput, “head.” Recorded from the mid-17th century, it came to mean a casual labourer or odd-job man in Scotland in the mid-18th century, then a person who carries a golfer’s clubs in the mid-19th century.

Borrowed through Scots caddie, earlier "cadet" or "young man," from French cadet, ultimately from Latin caput, "head." The golf sense grew from the idea of a hired attendant.
