Simplified etymology

Cambric takes its name from Cambrai in northern France. Although cambric and chambray now denote different fabrics, both names derive from that town.

Named through Dutch or Flemish Kamerijk for Cambrai, the city in northern France associated with its manufacture. Cambric originally denoted a very fine white linen; the name later extended to similarly fine, closely woven cotton cloth.
