Simplified etymology

Codicil entered English in the late Middle Ages from Latin codicillus, a diminutive of codex. Since codex developed from the sense of a block of wood to a block split into tablets and hence a book, codicil applies to a small part of a legal document.

Through Middle French codicille from Latin codicillus, a diminutive of codex, 'book or written document.' The literal idea of a 'little document' became the legal term for a supplement that alters a will without replacing it.
