Crap is related to Dutch krappe, from krappen, “to pluck or cut off,” and perhaps also to Old French crappe, “siftings,” and Anglo-Latin crappa, “chaff.” It originally meant “chaff,” then residues or dregs; its late-19th-century senses “rubbish,” “nonsense,” “something of poor quality,” and “excrement” share the idea of rejected matter.

From Middle English 'crappe' ('chaff, residue'), from Old French 'crappe' ('siftings, waste'), from Medieval Latin 'crappa' ('chaff'). The vulgar senses are later developments.
