Simplified etymology

Daffodil developed from affodil, a medieval alteration of asphodel that was applied to several different plants. Asphodel itself came through Latin from Greek asphodelos, of unknown origin; how affodil acquired its initial d is also unknown.

Developed from Middle English affodill, from Medieval Latin affodillus and ultimately Greek asphodelos. The initial d may reflect reanalysis of Dutch de affodil, 'the affodil,' when bulbs were imported from the Netherlands.
