From dandy + -ism. Dandy is of uncertain origin, though it is related to earlier expressions such as Jack-a-dandy. In the nineteenth century dandyism grew beyond fashionable dress into a deliberate aesthetic of self-command, wit, elegance, and resistance to bourgeois convention.
