Simplified etymology

Dysentery entered English in the late Middle Ages through Latin from Greek dusenteria. This came from dusenteros, “afflicted in the bowels,” combining dus-, “bad,” with entera, “bowels.”

From Middle English dissenterie, through Old French and Latin dysenteria from Greek dusenteria, built from dus- ("bad, difficult") + entera ("bowels"). The historical English name bloody flux refers to a characteristic severe form.
