Simplified etymology

Emulsion, recorded in the early 17th century, originally denoted a milky liquid produced by crushing almonds in water. It ultimately derives from Latin mulgere, “to milk.” The word later developed its scientific sense of minute droplets of one liquid dispersed in another, from which the name for a type of household paint arose.

Borrowed from French émulsion, from New Latin emulsio, based on Latin emulgere ("to milk out, extract"). The scientific sense developed from the image of one liquid dispersed through another.
