   a parasitic disease, especially of sheep, in which a tapeworm larva in the brain causes dizziness and circling movements

   The shepherd recognized gid when the affected ewe began circling and losing its balance.

A seventeenth-century back-formation from giddy. The disease was named for its conspicuous neurological symptoms: affected animals become dizzy, lose coordination, and may turn repeatedly in circles.
