Etymology

From indistinguishable + -ity: in- ("not") + distinguish + -able + -ity. Distinguish comes through Old French distinguer from Latin distinguere ("separate, mark off"). Physics later adopted the noun for the principle that exchanging identical particles creates no observable difference.
