A Scots and northern English dialect word, also written jawp, joup, and jowp. Older Scots jawp is recorded from the early sixteenth century. The word is probably imitative of the sound and abrupt motion of splashing liquid; historical dictionaries suggest an earlier form jalp but do not establish a deeper origin.
