Simplified etymology

Limousine comes from French limousine, a caped cloak worn in Limousin, a region of central France. The covered compartment of an early motor car was thought to resemble the cloak, and shortly after 1900 the name was transferred to such cars, later especially to large chauffeur-driven luxury vehicles.

Borrowed from French limousine, originally 'of Limousin,' a region of central France. The automobile name is commonly linked to the hooded cloak worn there, because an early covered passenger body or driver covering suggested its shape.
