Simplified etymology

Maze is probably a shortening of Old English amaze, originally meaning “to stun” or “stupefy.” Maze first denoted delirium and had developed its familiar sense of a labyrinth by late Middle English.

From Middle English mase ('delusion, bewilderment'), probably from an Old English verb *masian ('to confuse'), related to amaze. The sense 'confusing network of paths' developed from the idea of bewilderment.
