Borrowed through Latin mina from Ancient Greek mna, a unit of weight and value. The Greek term is of Semitic origin and is related to Hebrew maneh. Its value varied across the ancient Mediterranean and Near East, but the Greek mina was conventionally one sixtieth of a talent.
