Through Latin pantomimus from Greek pantomimos, 'imitator of all,' formed from panto- ('all') + mimos ('mime or imitator'). It first referred to a performer who conveyed a whole story by movement. The distinctively British comic Christmas show developed from later European theatrical traditions.
