Simplified etymology

Platter entered English in the Middle English period from Old French plat, referring to a large dish. It belongs to the same family as plate and ultimately derives from Greek platus, meaning “flat.”

From Middle English plater, through Anglo-Norman from Old French plate ('metal plate'); it is related to plate and ultimately a doublet of plateau. The serving-dish sense is oldest, while twentieth-century slang transferred the round, flat shape to phonograph records.
