Simplified etymology

Quoth, an old way of saying “said,” comes from Old English cwethan, “say.” The same verb forms the second element of bequeath.

From Middle English quoth, from Old English cwaeth, the first- and third-person past singular of cwethan ("to say"). It survives as an archaic defective verb, usually placed before its subject, and is historically unrelated to quote.
