Simplified etymology

Regency derives ultimately from Latin regere, “to govern or rule.” Its familiar historical sense refers to 1811–1820, when George, Prince of Wales governed as regent for George III, and this period later gave its name to distinctive styles and to Regency romances.

From Middle English regencie and Medieval Latin regentia, based on Latin regens, 'ruling,' the present participle of regere, 'to rule.'
