   At dusk he feared that he would reindue the hated personality he had tried to escape.

Formed from re- ('again') and indue, a dated spelling of endue. In the relevant older sense, indue comes from Latin induere, 'to put on or clothe.' Stevenson uses reindue figuratively for putting on a personality again, as though it were a garment.
