Simplified etymology

Rheumatism entered English in the early 17th century from Greek rheumatizein “to snuffle,” derived from rheuma “stream.” The disease was named when it was believed to result from excessive watery fluids flowing through the body.

From Latin rheumatismus and Ancient Greek rheumatismos ("a discharge of humors"), from rheuma ("flow"). The name reflects the ancient belief that bodily fluids flowing through the body caused joint and muscular pain.
