Borrowed from Middle French setier or sestier, from Latin sextarius, a measure whose name derives from sextus, 'sixth.' Its value varied by place and substance; the Paris grain setier was twelve boisseaux, about 156 liters. Septier is an older spelling used by Adam Smith and in earlier French dictionaries.
