Stoic derives from Greek Stoa Poikilē, the “Painted Porch” in Athens where Zeno taught in the 3rd century BC. It first referred to followers of his philosophy, which urged wise people to accept fate and remain indifferent to pleasure and pain, and later came to mean someone who endures hardship without complaint.
