Tariff came into English in the late 16th century through French from Italian tariffa, based on Arabic ʿarrafa, “notify.” It first denoted an arithmetical table, then a list of customs duties, and by the mid-18th century a classified list of charges used by hotels and other businesses.

From Italian tariffa, an arithmetical table or list of customs duties, through forms also found in French, Spanish, and Portuguese. The Italian word came from Arabic ta'rif, notification or explanation; English records the customs sense from the late sixteenth century.
