From Middle English noumpere (mistakenly divided as 'an oumpere'), from Old French nonper ('not equal, odd, a third party'), from non- ('not') + per ('equal', from Latin par). The 'n' was lost by false splitting of 'a noumpere' into 'an oumpere'.
