Through Late Latin gehenna and Greek geenna from Hebrew ge Hinnom, literally "Valley of Hinnom," a valley outside ancient Jerusalem associated in biblical tradition with child sacrifice and later with divine punishment. The name developed the senses "hell" and "place of misery."
