Simplified etymology

Genre was borrowed into English in the early 19th century from modern French genre. The French word developed from the same Latin source as gender—genus, meaning “birth, family, nation”—after the consonant represented by the “d” in gender had disappeared in French.

Unadapted borrowing from French genre, from Old French gen(d)re, borrowed from Latin genere. Doublet of gender and genus.
