Simplified etymology

Hash originally denoted a dish of cooked meat cut into small pieces and reheated in gravy. The word comes from a 16th-century French word meaning “an axe.” In the 18th century hash developed the sense “a jumble of mismatched parts,” which underlies the expression make a hash of. Hash for cannabis resin is a shortening of hashish, from Arabic al-ḥašīš, a specialized use of a word meaning “herbage, fodder, hay.”
