Simplified etymology

Metaphysics entered English in the later Middle Ages. Its name refers to the works of Aristotle placed after his writings on physics, using Greek meta in the sense “after.”

From Medieval Latin metaphysica, from Greek τὰ μετὰ τὰ φυσικά, "the things after the Physics," the title applied to Aristotle's works placed after the Physics.
