Simplified etymology

Parody entered English in the early 17th century through late Latin from Greek parōidia ‘burlesque poem’, formed from para- ‘mock-’ and ōidē ‘ode’. Its sense ‘a feeble imitation’ developed in the mid-19th century.

Etymology

From Latin parōdia, from Ancient Greek παρῳδία (parōidía, “parody”), from παρά (pará, “besides”) + ᾠδή (ōidḗ, “song”).
