Postscript comes from Latin postscriptum, based on postscribere, “to add in writing.” Its elements are Latin post, “after” or “later,” and scribere, “to write,” so it denotes something written after the main text.

From New Latin postscriptum, 'something written afterward,' the neuter past participle of Latin postscribere, from post ('after') + scribere ('to write'). The broader sense of a later addition grew from the note traditionally placed below a letter's signature.
