Borrowed from Dutch ranten or randen ('to rave, talk nonsense'), related to Middle Dutch ranten ('to rant, babble, frolic'); its deeper origin is uncertain. The early idea of noisy, extravagant speech produced both the angry verb and the noun for a long, uncontrolled tirade.
