Simplified etymology

Rave was borrowed in Middle English from Middle French raver, a variant of resver, and originally meant “to be mad,” soon developing the sense “to speak wildly.” The French forms probably go back to re- combined with an unrecorded post-classical Latin exvagare, “wander” or “roam.” The sense “enthusiastic recommendation or review” is early 20th century, “lively party” is mid-20th century, and the electronic dance gathering is first recorded in 1989.
