A twentieth-century noun made from the phrasal verb roll out, in its literal sense of moving something out on wheels. It was first used of aircraft rolled from the assembly hangar for their public debut, and from there generalised to any staged public launch — a software rollout keeps the metaphor of something large being wheeled steadily into view.
