Etymology

From steatopygia + -ous. Steatopygia combines Greek stear, steatos ("fat, tallow") with pyge ("buttocks, rump"). The adjective is now uncommon and is strongly associated with nineteenth- and early twentieth-century physical anthropology, so historical applications to ethnic groups require care and context.
