Coined in 1882 by the English psychologist Frederic W. H. Myers from tele- ("at a distance") + -pathy, from Greek patheia ("feeling or experience"). Its literal construction, "feeling from afar," was created for the supposed transfer of mental states without ordinary sensory signals.
