Simplified etymology

Daemon represents Greek daimōn, a divine or supernatural being between gods and humans, or an attendant or inspiring spirit. Such beings were not originally considered evil; the malign sense emerged in the Greek Septuagint during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC.

From Latin daemon, from Ancient Greek daimōn, "divine power, spirit, or lesser deity." The computing sense was adopted for an unseen background process by analogy with Maxwell's demon, an imaginary agent that continually sorts molecules; the claim that daemon abbreviates "disk and execution monitor" is a later backronym.
