From deduct + -ible. Deduct comes from Latin deductus, the past participle of deducere ("lead down or away"), from de- ("down, away") + ducere ("to lead"). The tax adjective describes an amount that may be taken away from a total; the insurance noun developed from the amount deducted from the insurer's liability.
