Simplified etymology

Fad arose in the early 19th century from fiddle-faddle, a late-16th-century expression meaning “nonsense.” Fiddle-faddle itself reflected the idea that fiddle playing was trivial or pointless, and it also gave rise to faddy.

Of uncertain origin, attested from the early 19th century; possibly a shortening of dialectal fidfad ('trifling matter'), or from French fadaise ('trifle, nonsense'). The ultimate source is obscure.
