Through French hypocondriaque from Greek hypochondriakos, 'of the region beneath the ribs,' formed from hypo- ('under') + chondros ('cartilage'). Ancient medicine associated the hypochondria, the upper abdomen, with melancholy and imagined illness; the anatomical term therefore developed the modern health-anxiety sense.
