   Each osteocyte occupies a tiny lacuna in the bone matrix.

A learned borrowing from Latin lacuna ("pit, hollow, gap, defect"). The same Latin family also produced lacune and, through Italian, lagoon; the abstract sense treats missing information as an empty space.
